Greetings everyone!

Platform info: Oracle v8.1.7.3.0 on W2K

Services was set to automatically start database together with instance by setting ORA_SID_AUTOSTART=TRUE. It worked for a while until we had to switch the database to ARCHIVELOG mode.

Steps taken prior the problem:
1) logged on to sqlplus as sysdba
2) alterred the database close (to mount state)
3) alterred the database to archivelog
4) shutdown immediate (I could have tried openning)
5) stopped oracleserviceSID
6) started oracleserviceSID

Seeing OracleService Status is "Started", we tried logging on via SQL*Plus. It gives a TNS-12514 error. Listener status shows the listener for this instance as started. Listener.ora contains the definition. Restarting the listener did not help. Manually starting the database via sqlplus did. Now we can't rely on the service to automatically start the database.

My next step is to re-create the services. But that would not explain the problem. I was hoping someone could help me understand this situation. And maybe I could make a more thought-out action as opposed to guessing.

Thanks in advance.

Respectfully,

N. A. Jam
